In the United Kingdom you have 'Agents' and 'Personal Managers' - both work on your behalf and therefore you only need one or the other. In a sense both are Agents but the idea behind a Personal Manager is they are able to pay more attention to your career.

In America you may well need a Manager and an Agent because some of the Agencies are so large you may need a Manager to look after your affairs as well. In some cases if you are only represented by an 'agent' but they take a personal interest in your career, there is no reason to have a Manager as well, though bear in mind that in America only the Agent can legally do a 'deal' for you. Also, in America, a franchised Agent is one who is licensed to represent Union performers and so it is to your benefit to be represented by an Agent who will also give you a certain degree of protection and a recognised standard in the way they do business. In the UK you should consider agents who are members of the P.M.A.
