You can expect your career to develop in many ways over many years but you must not expect everything at once.

Make sure you have no work conflicts. People will not find work for you if there are conflicts all the time. They will find someone who is available. Manager/Agents need clients who are dependable.

Your photograph is crucial - as it is your 'calling card' it must look like you. Beware of any photograph scams - Managers/Agents should not insist that you have new photos made by a designated photographer as a condition of signing you and you should not pay up-front to have your photographs done.

Being an actor is choosing a hard way to live where nothing is permanent. You will need determination, persistence and endurance, as well as the ability to face rejection. Through all of this you will need to keep a happy, positive attitude, as there are no guarantees of success.

On having chosen who to work with, you discover they are not ambitious for you, then you are with the wrong person.

If you feel guilty about calling your Management/Agency you are with the wrong one - there should always be someone to speak to who will let you know what is happening with your career and whom you feel confident with.

A high percentage of acting is business - you are your own company. You have to build and maintain your 'company name'. and you will need to spend money and a lot of energy to build your 'company name'. People will be watching to see what sort of 'company' you are. Are you reliable, versatile, trustworthy? Can they work with you long term? Is it worth their while working with you? All this takes time. You will need to develop your career. Be focused. Believe it or not, many actors are not focused!

If you are subjected to inappropriate office behaviour in an agency office - whether sexual or otherwise - notify British Equity.(SAG in America)
